City Busses...Small Town Girl

This week has been great. =) well, every week has been great here so far actually! Yay! I've been here three weeks. Wow. Already three weeks. It's funny, because before I left the US, back before I was excited to leave, a whole year seemed like SUCH a long time. Now it feels like it won't be enough!!!!!!! Haha anywayz, ON TO BUSINESS =P

I have been very successful at navigating myself to the bus station ever since my little incident =P it's really not that hard once you know the right way. I like it, it's a nice little walk. The only thing I hate is that at the end of school I'm usually starving and I have to pass this delicious looking pizzaria on the way. (yes! They do have Italian food! And Chinese, and mexican, and even Thai I heard. Even though I hvent tried any haha) so I walk past that everyday and start drooling. It's bad. And also, in the bus station there is a little quickie mart that has food and stuff. I would go in there to buy something, but the language barrier bothers me. All I can do is ask in English still haha. But I'm working on that =)

Ummm...Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty normal days I think. On wednesday at school we had a 'morning show'. It's between my first and second class and it's for like 10-15 minutes. They do this every Wednesday morning I hear. Well the whole school gathers together in the middle part that is as big as an auditorium but looks like a cafeteria, and a lot of kids gather on the second floor above that looking over the balcony-ish things. Pretty much they can play music or do something funny. I heard that it was all about making fun of people and having fun. So yay =)

Nothing happened Thursday I don't think...I think I passed out on the bus ride home haha but that's all =P

Friday! Was a good day. The weekend was here and we all got out of schoo early =D yay! So me and Stephanie (from LA) had planned to go shopping at the mall in Næstved. I was soooooo excited for this. So we got out of school and she had to do something with her class for like half an hour so I just chilled out and listened to music. Then she found me and we sat together for awhile just chatting and eating. She made some cookies that she 'messed up' so she let me benefit =D haha we left for the bus station (not getting lost by the way) and had to wait there for like half hour for the bus that goes to the mall. On the bus we both paid 8 kr. and sat down. Then Stephanie counted her change. 10 kr. short. NOOOOOO. After counting it about 20 times we decided to talk to the driver at our stop. We were both laughing histerically about this. Well, I was at least hahaha. At our stop steph tried to reason in Danish. And guess what, the bus driver answered her in DANISH! so then, seeing we weren't getting anywhere, I busted out my English =) eventually we left the bus with her 10 kr. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, cuz not. But that could buy her an ice cream!!

So at the mall we walked around for a loooooong time. Just talking and looking. It was great =) it kills me how expensive some stuff is, but that's normal and I'll just have to get used to it. We walked by this one store and saw the sales table outside the store. There were jeans on it. For ONLY 100 kr!!!! That is crazy cheap for jeans. Too bad the only sizes were WAY too small for us =( but then we noticed the rest of the table was buy 2 for 150 kr!!! Super sale!!! We picked up a bunch of stuff =D after some difficultly in finding proper sizes and colors, we both walked out of the store with a dress! Our first Danish clothing purchase =) and the sales girl was really nice. She spoke English to us when we told her we didn't speak Danish yet. She helped us out a lot. It was great.

We eventually realized it would probably be a good thing to figured when the bus comes. So we walked out and went by the street by the stop. There was no schedule, just a bus stop sign. So we stood there for like half an hour or more just waiting for a bus to drive by. Then we saw that a bus had pulled into the mall parking lot. We watched this happen 3 more times. See, we didt want to leave the bus stop because we both new, that as soon as we got far enough away, the bus would come. But after watching the third bus go into the lot i made a decision. We left for that bus. We had gotten about 100 meters away and GUESS WHAT! yep...the bus pulled up to the stop we had just been at, and it left. We KNEW that would happen. We both bust up laughing soooo much. It was hilarious. And Stephanie threatened to kill me. Haha but RUNNING, we caught the other bus in the parking lot. So that was good.

Then we made it back to the station. Stephanies parents were coming to get her. I was taking the bus home. No biggie right? Wrong. I missed a bus. And there wasn't another one for 2 hours ^_^ yea. I don't have much luck here. Haha but! I eventually made it home =D safe and sound

On Saturday me, and my parents went to århus to his sisters 50th birthday party. Eh. It was ok. Like, it was exciting and happy, but it's weird to not talk to anyone in the room because we literally can't communicate. But! At the beginning of the party it was soooooo funny! The birthday girl is a part if some square dancing club so, you guessed it, they square danced for us!! (they have it in Europe! I couldn't believe it) and after the pros did it, they each broke off and found a partner in the crowd. Then another one with the club. Then the amateurs got a chance again. Haha yes. I did it. ^_^ and I sucked. Not really haha the calling was in English which was awesome I think. But I had problems with the spinning part. Everything else was great =D hilarious. Yes.

And today I'm leaving for my intro camp with the other exhange students in the country!!!! Yay!! My first train ride =D I can't wait. It's going to be lots of fun this week.

THINGS IVE LEARNED SO FAR::

I can't remember right now =P so I'll write again when I get home!!!

Cars, Bicycles, Busses..Oh, My!!

Heyyyyy =) sorry it's been so long! I just haven't felt like writing this past week at all. So i'm trying to break myself out of this slump I'm in =)

Anywayz, so what has been going on this past week? Well, both a lot of stuff and hardly anything at all =P let me start at the beginning!

So I told you about my first day of school and how awesome it was. Well, the second day was ok. The schedule changes and extra long classes kinda took their toll. Also, having classes that are completely in danish are kids boring to sit through. Ok, a lot boring actually haha. The teahers all felt the need to explain to me upon our first meeting that they would be teaching in Danish and couldn't translate everything for me...ok, that's no problem. Cuz I already knew all the classes were going to be in Danish anyway. I mean, I can't expect the teacher to translate just cuz one American is in the classroom. Right! Haha so pretty boring. People sitting next to me keep asking me if I understand anything. Uh, noooo I don't understand. Haha at all actually. So during school I pretty much sit there. Color with my pen. Daze off. Eat some fruit I packed in my lunch. Yea that's pretty much how it's gone. But it's ok. Cuz I'm willing to learn the language! =D trying to learn it anyways.

I don't think anything happened on Friday...wait! Haha ok friday was te first morning I had to wake up at 5:30 to be ready to ride my bike 2 km to the bus stop to catch my bus at 6:45. Surprisingly, this is not as bad as it sounds =P the morning air felt great and was very awakening. I don't know how to explain it, but it felt great to be out. No one else is out and about yet. The road is your own. (which is great cuz I'm terrified of getting hit by a car on my bike lol) everything just looked better. I don't know. Then I did my school stuff. Yay me =) then! School ended. Astrid and I ride the bus home but we have to go to the bus station. So I figured I would wait for her so we could go together since neither of us knew where the station was. Astrid didn't know I was waiting and had already left the school. The poor foreign kid was standing on the school steps not knowing what to do lol. Thankfully one of her friends saw me and called astrid for me and I found out I needed to walk to the station. No prob, right? Wrong. Haha does bekah know where the station is? No. But I said I would make it anyway. So I got about 3 blocks from the school and didn't know which way to turn when all of the sudden!! That same friend and her mom pulled up next to me and gave me a ride. I paid special attention so I knew the way next time. They were so nice. Haha I'm so thankful =D

Then on Saturday! Wow. My host dad's side of the family had a family reunion at our house in our 'barn'. (it's in quotes because it's not like a farm, red barn. It hold tractors, yea. But it's all metal) and so there were about 50-60 extra people at our house that day. Soooooo many people. We all ate some snack (cakes and cookies they brought) and we also ate dinner together. It was crazy. All those people and all were relatives. When several first met me they asked (in Danish of course) if I was astrid. And all I could respond with was 'jeg hedder rebekah' (my name is Rebekah) and then it was expained that I was an exchange student from the US. o, and one minor thing:: when gathering 'formally' with a group of people, you have to go around and shake everyone's hand and greet them. Yes. Everyone. Haha I learned that after my first rotary meeting. And it's easier to not skip around and just go in a line so you make sure to greet everyone. =P all the people just hung out in our property all day. There were some games, a trampoline was up, and a little canooing in the Suså creek at the edge of our land. It was a good day. Long, but good. O! And I got to practice my Danish. Which pretty much thrilled me. This little cousin Andrea is 11 and she has just started learning english. I got to talk to her throughout the night. Like she would ask me questions in English and I answered in Danish and vise versa. It was great. Also kinda frustrating. I was frustrated at myself for not knowing more words. It made explaining where I live kind of difficult. But it was still soooooo great! I didn't care that I said it wrong or my grammar was bad. It's a learnig process =D

ok, now Sunday. I had my first rotary district meeting. All the rotary exchange students in my district met together. It wad great! We went over the rules for what seemed like the millionth time haha and then we all just got to hang out with each other and talk. There are Canadian, brazilians, ecuadorians (????), chileans (????), mexicans, Americans, a guy from Lithuania, anddddd I think that's it. There are about 30 of us I want to say. No idea. But what I can tell you is that we are all super loud when we all get together and talk at the same time haha. It was lots of fun to see them all. And like I said in an earlier post, we are like magnets. Drawn to each other with an instant connection. I felt no awkwardness whatsoever with them. And we are all so excited for this up coming week. From august 22-29 all of the rotary exchange kids in the COUNTRY are going to an intro camp =D learning some Danish and about the culture. It's gunna be awesome seeing everyone!!! I'll write more about that after it happens haha Then Sunday night rené came over and hung out with astrid and I for a couple hours. It was great. I love having friends ^_^ he told me that I inspired him to read twilight. Haha so proud of him =P he left around 10:30 then I hit the hay. Sleeping away the night in total preparation for the following day. I needed the sleep for what happened next.

Monday was mildly eventful. MILDLY. Depending on if you feel sorry for me or laugh at me. My sister and I need to ride the bus home after school as we live about 20 minutes out of næstved. (city bus btw. Not an icky school bus) so since I learned on Friday that I could walk by myself to te station and astrid was out on a trip anyway, I set out on my own. Trying to follow the path that we had taken in the car on Friday. There were some other kids around so I felt completely confident I was going in the right direction. I walked about 1-2 km into the downtown of næstved and took a couple turns and realized to myself:: I have no idea where I'm going. Uh, oh. Foreign kid lost in the city!!!!! (Im laughing right now as I write this. It's so funny now) I walked a couple more blocks. Took a couple turns. Doubled back a *few* times. I almost asked for help a dozen times. But I wasn't sure if I should ask in Danish because then they might answer in Danish and I'd have no clue what they said, or if I asked in english I was worried maybe they didn't know English. (with my luck I would pick a person in a country that learns english from 3rd grade who didn't speak English) anywayz, I refrained from asking for directions, which in hindsight was really dumb. But I've learned it's ok to ask. Haha so about 30 minutes later after I walked down this street for about 1 km and PRAISE GOD I found the bus station!!!!!!!! Sweetest sight my eyes have ever seen =D it was great. today, however, I learned that I was never lost in the first place. I had walked the EXACT bus route that it takes from the station to my school. Now THAT takes skill ^_^

Monday night, after being exhausted from walking everywhere and biking home, I was ready to go to bed when I got home. I even put on some sweat pants and ate a snack. Yay! Sleep! Wrong. I had forgotten that I had a rotary meeting to go to that night. So I changed once again and after my host mom came home from work we all set out in the car. We went about an hour to north of Copenhagen (where ALL the rich people live I learned) we went to see this one lady who owns a bunch if horses out there and a stable and stuff. Let me tell you! They have about 14-18 horses in their stable-palace (no joke, it's huge and luxurious) there was an indoor training/ show ring. An outdoors one. Like 6 fenced in areas with grass. And there were 3 trailers for transporting the horses. (one of which was capable of taking 5 horses and a family in the mobile home area) CRAZY!!! I loved seeing and petting the horses. They have soft noses =D and these aren't everydy horses. They are the special trained kind. The kind worth a million+ euro! I felt kind of bad for the horses actually. I mean they don't deserve to my cooped up like that just to perform tricks. I always wish I could read an animal's mind to see if they're happy. It's so sad sometimes...anywayz, we left about 10 at night and drove home. I was soooooo tired.

Then I woke up the next morning at 7:30 and my host mom drove me to school at 8:50 because my first morning class was cancelled. It was nice =) after school a friend offered me a ride to the station so I didn't get list again =P then since I didn't have my bike at the bus stop I had to walk the 2 km home. Not that bad. Pretty relaxing actually =) (well, besides the fact that I had just received 30 lbs worth of school books ^_^) I enjoyed it. Then today I walked ALL the way to the bus station by myself WITHOUT getting lost or asking for help =DDDD you have no idea how awesome it is haha that's about it!

THINGS I HAVE LEARNED SO FAR::
the boys here LOOOOOOVE hair gel! haha
riding a bike 2k at 6:30 am is NOT as bad as it sounds.
The da Vinci code is a really good mystery book, but I still can't decide if the ending sucked or not.
Cold oatmeal is AH-mazing. (it looks nasty, but I had to try after my host sister did it. Take oatmeal and pour milk over it and add sugar!!)
a lot of Danes have a pretty biased view of America and don't hesitate to ask about it (on several occasions I've been asked stereotypical questions about Americans, once by a teacher even)
they rarely snack on junk food in school. Most people eat some kind of fruit or a sandwich.
I can't remember if I told you, but when they speak english, a LOT of danes have a British accent.
There is some kind of performance every Wednesday morning in the huge 'cafeteria' kinda thing, between first lesson and second lesson and everyone in the school goes. (that's a boat load of Danish people at one time in one area) lol

and that's all for now!!! Email me =D jeg elsker dig. I love you. Hugz.

Exciting Times=New Friends

AGH! it feels like forever since I last wrote. So much has happened in just these few short days =D let me tell you!

Sooo where to start? Ok! I got it! On Tuesday of last week (yes this is old by now) my host sister had a friend over that night. His name is renè and we all kinda hung out for a few hours that night. Sooo much fun! We played some board games like the classic MEMORY game =D you remember, the one where you flip the cards to find the match. Ha yea we are 17&18 and this is what we do for fun =) but anywayz, I tell you this old story because he and I got along really well that night, and I new when I went to bed that night that I had made my first Danish friend! You can't imagine my excitement haha

ok, now we can jump forward to this last Saturday. If you recall in my last blog, I mentioned that my sister was throwing a party. But not til the evening. So that afternoon, Astrid René and I went to an outside swimming pool for a few hours. It was so cold haha I forgot what an outside pool I like. Newport has ruined me! =P

So after we decided we'd had enough 'fun' freezing our butts off, we decided that we were hungry. So! Off to McDonalds we went. (YES! THEY ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!) it was really funny because they kept calling it 'MacDonalds' like with an accent and evrything. Haha it was great. So we ate (after they ordered for me of course) and I got a happy meal =D yea, you can't beat that.

Once we were done at 'MacDonalds', René dropped us off (yes he can drive!!!) and my host mom picked me and astrid up. Then, a couple hours later was the party. Astrid invited people that she went to a boarding school with and a few others that live near here. They all were very nice and spoke at least a little to me. It was lots of fun for the first 4 hours, but after the midnight marker, it all kinda goes down hill =P I started to get really tired, so I can't imagine I was much fun. But I managed to make another friend. Signe (see-nay) is a really cool girl. And she goes to my school. (her and rené were the only local people I think) At the party there was a lot of loud music (good thing we live in the country haha) and we ate some snacks and of course, there was some alcohol there. My mind is still in the American mode when it comes to this. Like, parents are contributing to the delinquency of minors and destributing to minors and things like that. This stuff still crosses my mind a lot, but I have to keep telling myself that it's all legal here. I'll probably get used to it...so anywayz! At about 1:30 I headed inside to do something and then I was kind of followed by rené and signe. We just went back to my room and chilled for the next couple of hours. Then at like 4 I finally was able to sleep =)

On Sunday, astrid and I were very tired from the night before. But we managed to make it. (with a nap) and I got to experience Danish pancakes for a snack! It was great =D they are thinner than American ones, but not like crepes. And you can put sugar, jam, or syrup on it and then you roll it up! I also found out this is ok to eat with your hands. Haha messy, but they were VERY good.

Not much else has happened On Monday or tuesday. I started reading the da Vinci code. Really good so far =) and today! Today was my first day of school =) yes, I was absolutely terrified at first. I didn't have to be there until 9:30 because I'm a second year student, so my host mom dropped me on her way to work. About 40 minutes early. Haha so I wandered around a bit. Then as I was coming up the stairs, guess who I saw!!!! Another exchange student!!! (I'd met them all the night before) I instantly felt better and her and I walked and talked until we met as a group. Her name is Stephanie and she's from LA. Close to Oregon! Hana

school was a little scary at first, but people started to talk to me and this made me really happy and relaxed. The same questions popped up all day though. "why did you pick Denmark" "do you want to learn Danish" "how long have you been here" and so on. I'm not joking either. Same questions all day haha. They got easier to answer though. "it sounded like a great country, I love it here" "of course I want to learn, I'm trying to" "I've been here 2 weeks". Haha it was good. I didn't mind what people said to me actually. It was just that they talked to me. Yes, I'm playing the foreign card. I like it =D ^_^

So, I should tell you about the school. It's huge. 1200 students about. It's called a gymnasium. And o, one minor detail, the schedule changes everyday. =) yea, no biggie haha o, not only does the schedule change, but the classroom is never the same either. I think they like to keep us on our toes? I have no idea. But it's kind of easy. I'm in class 'r'. And I stay with that class (as in people) almost all day. (changes for language classes) so I'll be able to jus follow them around to look for a class and we will all get to know each other soon which is great!

After school instead of taking the bus home, rené picked me up and took me to his house where we hung out. Ate. Drank some soda. Candy!! And 'Friends' and 'Americas next top model' were on tv. (he loves antm too! This is why we are best friends now haha) so this was a great time. Then he took me home while he was on his way to swim at the pool. Haha it's funny, because it's freezing today. Worse than last time =P

All in all, this has been a great day and week =D I'm loving Denmark more and more everyday. Here is my last bit to say.

THINGS IVE LEARNED SO FAR::
I've never seen so many people smoking in my entire life than I have here
they eat pizza here! (homemade of course)
you can eat birds, pizza, and pancakes with your hands and don't need to use a fork and knife
exchange students have like magnets in themselves. We are drawn together and have an instant connection
they don't have skittles here!!!!!!
My counselor is probably the sweetest woman ever. (even though I only met her once)
(a quote from someone at the party) "you know you can always get the truth from small children and drunk people"
^^ I'm not sure I agree with that... Because drunken outburtsts are never necessarily sober thoughts
math is indeed the same in every language...but the explanation as to HOW to complete the problem is not. Haha thank goodness I knew what we were doing =P

I think that's about it! Ha you know what sucks? I think of all this great stuff to put in my blog at the end here all the time, like in car rides and stuff, and when I come to write it I can never remember!!!!!!! =( haha so just ask me questions ok people! Love you all =D

Food, customs, people

Hello =) several people have asked me the pretty basic questions about food and people. (Danish boys ^_^) so I decided to write an entry that is specifically about those things. Enjoy!

I have been here nearly a week now. A just by observing how the things around me ate occurring, I've picked up a few things already. I'll start with the food. Danish food is very good =) haha well most at least. I'm going to explain about the meals in my first family, as I have no idea if it is Danish custom or just unique to my family.

We eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is a change for me as I don't think I've eaten breakfast on a regular basis in years. This meal is at the table =P and we don't eat this one as a family (yet anyways). My place is always waiting for me at te table when I get up in the morning. The choices for breakfast are yogurt (that you pour from a carton into a bowl) with granola and nuts and dried fruit mixed in, cocoa puff-y cereal (that turns your milk chocolate), and oatmeal. I haven't eaten the oatmeal. I like the other 2 a lot better. So I sort of alternate the days I eat cereal and the days I eat yogurt.

Lunch is always the same thing. Since my host dad is still on holiday from work, he, Astrid (my sister) and myself eat together. We eat the very Danish dark, rye bread for this. I was really confused on my first lunch because I thought we were going to eat sandwiches, and then they started cutting their piece of bread in half. So what you do is take a slice of bread, cut it in half, then put anything you would like on it that's at the table. There's little slices of meat, some cheese, sauces, cucumbers and tomatoes (I have eaten more cucumber this last week than my whole life I think haha) and just various things. I found out what I liked and what I didn't like very fast. I, at one point or another, have tried everything at the table. My favorite is this kind of cheese, like cream cheese sorta, with peppers and vegies in it, and cucumber, and a kind of meat. This goes on one half of my bread usually. Then the other half I just fill with anything that looks good. I have tried liver paste, pickled beets, 'pepperoni', and another kind of meat. Those I found out that I didn't quite care for =P but there's also a 'tuna' thing in tomato sauce that you put mayo on. That's good. And this sauce thing with pickles and other things in it that you put on meat. That's pretty good too. More or less, I like it all. Haha

Then there is dinner. Dinner is a hot meal that my host mom comes home from work and makes every night. It's made up of some kind of meat, a vegie, and potatoes. Potatoes are a huge staple here. You can boil them and eat them whole, or bake them in slices, or there are a million ways to cook them I bet. I have always loved potatoes. So I think this is my perfect country haha. We eat dinner as a family too.

I have gone to 2 BBQs since ive been here, and I noticed one thing right away: you bring your own stuff with you. I went to one with my Rotary club and every family brought their own drinks and plates and silverware and glasses and 'desserts'. Then the night before I went with my sister to her friend's house and she brought her own drinks and sausages. This was kind of odd, you know? So I asked my second host dad if this was a Danish thing. And he said that it's all just more practical. If you're invited over for dinner of course you don't brings things, but with a group of people it is more practical for everyone to bring their own. Huh, maybe Americans should adopt this one =P

i think that's about all for food...o!!!!!! Wait!!! I forgot to tell you, you ALWAYS use a knife for dinner and lunch. And no matter what Emily Post says about it, the tines of the fork are always pointed down when you eat what you have just cut. It took me a few times to figure this out, but monkey see monkey do =D I have gotten a lot better at weilding a knife. It took several failed attempts and dropped food though =P it's not that hard though once you're used to it. O, and clean your plate of food. Don't leave anything edible behind, k =) I haven't done this for fear of seriously offending them. I don't think anything terribly bad would happen to me, but why risk it? =P

ok! Now for the people!! The Danes are very nice so far. I like them. And believe it or not, they aren't all the blonde haired blue eyed stereotype. Most are, however. Haha but they aren't a nasty bleach blonde, it's a darker sandy blonde. I like it =) and almost everyone I've met has the bluest eyes ever! They really are lovely...this is for all my girlfriends, the boys that I've seen are fabulous! Haha very pretty. I think you would all like them ;P I know I do. Everyone out here is very tall in comparison to me haha it's ok. I'm used to it...a lot of people smoke out here. I thought it wad rather ironic when I saw some lady riding her bike with a cigerette in her mouth. But that's just what they do I guess. Don't worry, guys, I won't start smoking over here =) and as many of you don't know this, the legal drinking age here is 16. Very different from America. So it's very common for teens, as my host parents said, to gather with alcohol and often consume too much. 'they can't find that right amount' (my host dad said that) haha so it's different, and I'm about to see just how different. Yesterday my host dad bought some alcohol for my sisters party on Saturday. And that's when I'll get to see exactly how much they love to party haha.

Denmark is a great country. Lots of new and exciting things and I often catch myself with my mouth hanging open. Completely awe struck at the amazing-ness of it all. Here are some last-minute thoughts::

Danes wear their wedding bands on the right hand
I am fully prepared to gain weight, but I have no idea if I will because now I don't snack between meals, the food is healthy, and I'll be riding my bike everyday
they have hares out here, not rabbits
on Monday I might get an opportunity to shoot a shot gun...this scares me senseless
after over a year of not riding a bike, my butt is screaming at me hahaha
my Danish is improving everyday
books are your best friend when you have nothing to do (I've read 3 1/2 in four days)
I have deer that live about 100 meters from my house and they frequently are out in the field in the backyard

I think that's all now now! Email me more questions =)

love,
Rebekah

In Denmark!

Hello everyone! I'm just checking in from the other side of the pond =)

I arrived in denmark on Saturday at about 1:30 pm this time and 4:30 pacific time. It was quite a long flight. Haha. I left portland with a fellow rotary exchange student, Brittney. This flight wasn't very long, but I managed to occupy myself with a movie =) the last song. Even though I do not like Miley Cyrus, this was a good movie and I almost cried several times. The only thing that held me back was the fact that I wasn't alone on the plane and the 17 yr old guy sitting next to me would think I was dumb. Haha

We arrived in Chicago at about 7:30 central time. We left Chicago at 10. Brittney and I were both starving so we grabbed some chow after finding taking the train and finding our gate a MILLION MILES AWAY! ha not really, but it felt that way with a mega weighted down book bag on. My shoulders still hurt =P Before leaving Chicago we also picked up a couple more rotary kids along the way. How did we know they were rotary kids you ask? We all had on our spiffy blue blazers!! =) so we started talking to some. I don't think we once told names. Just where we were from and which part of Denmark we were going to.

Sitting right across from me at the airport were 2 girls in their twenties. They were speaking, go figure, DANISH! I got a huge kick out of this. Eventually they started talking to us about the country and what not. Just talking. They were so nice! I met a two real Danes before even arrivng in the country!! Haha

on the plane i didn't sit by one exchange student. So i was kind of sad at first. But then the flight attendants brought out our dinner. It was soo cute! The portions and the little container and tray! I wasn't sad anymore =P however, the novelty of it all wore thin fast. I decided to watch a movie! Dear John was my pick this time around. This was also really good I thought. Not jusr because Channing Tatum is a sexy beast. Haha this movie also almost made me cry. But I held it back! =) after this movie I turnd on Alice in Wonderland but I only made it to the part where she grows and shrinks. Then I turned it off and tried to catch some sleep.

I didn't sleep much or very well at all, but at one point my seat neighbor had to wake me up because the flight attendants were going to serve food agian. We were almost to Copenhagen at this point. So I snarffed down my food, drank my mini OJ and skalded my tongue on some tea, but nothing could put me in a bad mood. The captain's voice over the speaker telling us we were almost there was like music. Even though he said everything completely in danish first and then English. Haha

I got my first view of Denmark then. Through the clouds I was able to spot it. My new home!!! I was soooo happy =D

My host dad and sister came to get me. We shared some awkwardness. But that's only to be expected for awhile I guess. They brought me about 45 minutes to my new home. It's beautiful and VERY modern. We live out in the country on a little piece of land. Some of you will get a kick out of this, but it looks just like and reminds me of Nebraska. Sooooo much! Maybe that's why I already feel at home =) i love it and it's gorgeous. I love bering able to see for miles almost. Stupid trees =P

I have 2 outside cats and 1 inside dog. I love them. They seem to be a great cure for awkward situations. When it's dead silent or you have nothing to do PET AN ANIMAL! haha and be best friends =) they are like my best friends right now. My dog, louis, looks just like my old dog Mollie Jean. It's all great and I am loving it.

For the past 2 days I have pretty much just been trying to hang with my family. Though there isn't much to do. Today my host dad fixed the bike I'll be riding to the bus stop for school ^_^ and then after that we took a trip about half hour into the nearest 'big' city Næstved. Then off to the beach we went! Now, Denmark is a lot more north than Newport, but the water is warm!! Crazy right? Haha then we had some ice cream and drove home.

And just now is when I got home from being with my host sister, Astrid, and her friends for a few hours. They had a BBQ. =P yes, they have those in Europe. I'm going to one tommorow for rotary too. It should be lots of fun =) I'm having such a great time already. School starts august 11. Shortest summer ever. Haha but I'm excited to meet new people! Anywayz, that's about it for this blog. Now for the fun stuff!

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED SO FAR::

a knife is used for EVERY meal no matter what it is. by the way, you put your fork into the one you're about to eat, not the other one. Lol I learned this the hard way. I dropped my food a couple times =P
Europeans are crazy drivers yet they still manage to be better than most Americans =P
do NOT try the liver paste (actually, no, try it. I dare you)
sea gulls will fly nearly 30 km inland just to say hi to me =) haha not really. They come for the grass seed.
The plate MUST be completely empty of food when you're done eating (this is just what I have seen so far)
jet lag suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks
just because the Danes know English does NOT mean they will use it
the animals become your first and best friend (i'm just restating this one)

I think this is about it! I'm super tired, hence, jet lag sucks. =P email me with questions!!!!!

Love,
Rebekah
